Today on my way to tennis, I was stuck behind a regal GS. but it wasn't the opel derived one the Europeans call the insignia OPC/Vauxall VXR. no, this was an old school late 90's GS, with the 3800 S/C under the hood. This car was immaculate, and when I say immaculate, I mean it. looked showroom fresh. sadly, no SR20, but the afternoon post rainstorm lighting really made the black paint and the chromed wheels shine.
Sorta like this one!
I know they're unreliable and underpowered for what they are, but I find them beautiful, in a vanilla-bean kind of way!

I want one too in a above 65 AARP recipient, going nowhere fast, boring looking, unreliable w-body sort of way.

I don't know where you got your info but they're probably the most reliable car of all time. The trans does have some issues but that's usually due to abuse and lack of maintenance.
For it's time it wasn't underpowered at all. With a few little bolt ons it can be a mean little sleeper.
A few years back I found one in mint shape I wanted but it was too far away.

really? I thought that it was worse...
I know the N/A 3800's are pretty bulletproof, but I was pretty sure the S/C cars weren't

Century, Regal, LeSabre, Park Avenue — they were all essentially the same recipe for coma inducing commuting with an old school touch. The 2004 Park Ave was the last Buick to use a stand-up hood ornament.
Here is a minty LeSabre .

If I'm not mistaken, there is a sleeper documentary on YouTube about a college kid who sold an SHO, was given one of those by his grandfather, and he has now tuned it to smoke Corvettes and the like. Completely stock on the outside.

Yup. I watched it and had the hots for one for a while. GeorgeyBoy posted it in the comments here.

Unreliable? even in it's supercharged state the 3.8 is probably one of the most solid engines around. As for under-powered it's about on par with any of it's contemporary sporty sedan competitors.

Haha. He posted it as I was typing my comment.

relative to most daily driven vehicles on the road today, yes

Happens to me a lot. There's no comments when I start typing. By the time I'm done and it shows up, there's 3 others. That's what I get for fact checking and/or trying to find a good image/video.

I am also oddly attracted to these. We had one on the lot not too long ago that I had the pleasure of selling.
I have to say that the physical attraction is quickly thrown by the wayside with a stint behind the wheel. They're very comfortable while being dangerously disconnected from the road. I feel like the steering wheel only controls yaw and pitch, and not the actual wheels. Turn the wheel and everything rolls over and then the inertia forces the tires to move out of their straight position and then the nose slowly follows. But it takes bumps well.
